Hammer Mill Project

Repeating an already successful Hammermill installation

Exciting new projects in the Gwembe Valley and surrounding areas.

To be poor in Zambia is to struggle. To be disabled and poor in one of the poorest areas of Zambia is about as difficult as it gets.

Gwembe lady with leprosyHHI has contacted a number of groups composed of people with disabilities in these areas and, after listening to their ideas, has financed an initiative which makes a huge contribution to lifting them out of poverty. In rural areas the staple food is shima which is produced by grinding the local corn. This job has to be done with a hammer mill. HHI has already provided one disabled community with their own hammer mill, trained them how to use it and how to work together as a cooperative. The project has been a great success and the community is now making extra money by grinding corn for neighbouring villages. Soon we hope that they will be entirely self sufficient.

HHI now wants to replicate this project in other rural communities and we are hoping to attract funding from a grant provider for this purpose. We will keep you posted.
