Mumba community is so named because it is situated by a Mumba tree.
It is within walking distance of the HHI headquarters. It is struggling to teach over 70 vulnerable children and orphans in a very basic windowless building with a dirt floor and without furniture, books or blackboard. The teaching team consists of four unpaid volunteers from the community. They would very much like to build a school and HHI is working with them by providing funding to support a project which will raise money. This will enable the community to generate income and provide the children with a simple classroom, books, desks and chairs.
Lliswerry Comprehensive School in Newport, South Wales has raised funds to start a poultry project. A chicken house is already being built with funds from Lliswerry's Harvest collection and a sponsored aerobic session has provided the funds for the chickens.
The community hopes that 2011 will be a year of fund raising and that in 2012 they will start to build the school. All the labour and brick moulding will be done by the community themselves.
We look forward to seeing this community successfully build, maintain and develop their school. It will be sustained and owned by the people so that education can empower the next generation.
