Advent – God is the Source of Peace

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16 v33

There are days when our mind and body feel tired and drained; when we feel overwhelmed to a point where we can’t find peace. The definition of peace displayed in the entrance hall at the Peace Museum in Caen says, ‘Peace is a state of not being at war’.

This seems to be the wrong way round, then you realise this is the worldly view. Jesus tells us that he has overcome the world. His is a special peace, more than just the absence of conflict; it is taking action to restore a broken situation. It’s more than a state of inner tranquility; it’s a state of wholeness and completeness. God is the source of this peace.

Here a woman, rescued from the streets, enjoys the peace of Thanal House one evening:

Prayer

God of peace, may we call on you in our times of trouble rather than tackle them alone. Bring your calm into our lives so that we may become more whole and complete. Amen.
