Day 11 – 18th October 2025 Grateful Grace
We were very excited to make our visit to see Grace on this hot Saturday morning. Not only were we collecting the made-to-measure dress which Grace had sewn for Liz, but we were also delivering the hand propelled mobility cart which had been purchased for her from Lusaka. It was as we were leaving Grace on our first visit that her mother had tentatively suggested that ideally a hand cycling mobility cart would increase Grace’s upper body and arm movement, reduce her weight and support her mobility better than a wheelchair. Grace was not aware that we had managed to buy one in such a short space of time since our first visit on October 9th!
Today was going to be the day when Grace would try out this new gift. As soon as Grace saw the Hilux approaching with the cart in the back she started to smile. She couldn’t believe it. Her mother was awestruck too.
John helped her out of her wheelchair and onto the seat in the cart and she started to turn the handles. It wasn’t easy to manage the turning and steering, but she soon began to get the idea with our help. Also, the dress for Liz was beautifully completed and a perfect fit. Double delight!
Grace hopes to use the hand cycling cart to help her get to school in the afternoons. She is still sewing in the mornings and preparing the washable fabric pads for the HHZ menstrual hygiene outreach. Well done, Grace, we wish you all the best for the year ahead and we look forward to seeing you in 2026.
A huge thank you to the HHIUK supporter who gave us funds to ease some of Grace’s difficulties.
