Day 6 – 13th October 2025 – The HHZ Compound and Beyond with a trip to Florida!

Days four and five – Saturday and Sunday were spent relatively quietly.

Giving and Receiving

‘Monday morning started with a timely treat!  Two wheelchairs which had been purchased with the money we were given from our wonderful UK supporters, arrived from Lusaka.

The delivery of the wheelchairs is significant because on arrival at the HHZ compound in Monze last week we were greeted by two mothers carrying their disabled children on their backs, seeking help from HHZ. Alumbwe aged 14 and Swanna aged 7, both have cerebral palsy and rely on their mothers to carry them everywhere. And carrying a 14-year-old girl on your back is particularly exhausting!

Today, a few days later, thanks to HHZ’s swift action with the UK donations, the children received the new wheelchairs and left with their mothers to start a new and more comfortable life!’

Forward Planning

‘After a long, hot, dusty 2-hour drive through barren countryside, we arrived at Florida’s humble abode. She was seated with her sewing machine at her sturdy table under the shade of a tree, smiling as she sewed colourful skirts.  Florida had received training from the HHZ seamstresses and on completion of her course, she was given a new sewing machine funded by HHI. She has already generated some income from sewing and has purchased a goat. She hopes that the goat will have kids which she then plans to sell.

Because Florida’s father died some years ago, having an income is especially important for the family.  We sat under the tree with Florida discussing her business plans – Mr Gondwe helping with translation! Florida’s next plan is to ask the local headteacher to inform parents about her skills so they can buy made to measure uniforms from her at the start of term. Good plan!

Meanwhile, John, our very reliable HHZ driver, unloaded a bag of mealie meal to help feed Florida’s mother and her siblings. Florida was also pleased to receive some adult incontinent pads which we had brought with us from the UK.’
