Often we get requests for help with major surgery or an expensive course of medical treatment, and we try to respond to as many of these as possible. One recent one was Rajan, who was a “coolie”, i.e. someone without regular work and who had to go out and find work each day – work for which there are far more workers than work available. He was poor to start with, but then he developed fibroids in his throat, preventing him from working further. An operation was the only way out, but that would cost £450 and he could only scrape together £80. No-one else would help him.
HHI stepped in with a grant of £250, enabling the operation to take place, and he is now recovering, ably looked after by his devoted wife. It is a huge relief for his hard pressed family.
