Tuesday 11th February
Meeting at Asha Kiran Ashram
The Asha Kiran Ashram staff kindly agreed to attend a brief meeting with Jute and Philip in the morning even though it was a Hindu holiday in Tamil Nadu.
We all greeted each other warmly and gathered in the office with Director Porselvan Asir to discuss the school’s needs. Porselvan acted as translator.
Teaching aids were very much sought after to teach colour, number and measure. We discussed Indian story books, and I was able to share some of the ideas about how we use large storybooks UK schools.
Rs 15,000 (£140 of SFHHI money) was left in the office for the staff to purchase their educational materials. Receipts and pictures of the purchases will be sent.
After a quick cup of Indian tea and fond farewells we set off on the long, hot 4-hour drive back to Kerala.
At AKA we had a lovely easy time, filled with laughter. We understood that children are the same all over the world; language doesn’t matter, colour isn’t important, and disability doesn’t stop them from learning.
Tomorrow we will spend a whole day in Happy Valley School and see Phillip’s wonderful work.
