Can you help?

Dr John Phiri is a name familiar to many. He was supported through medical school by enthusiastic HHI contributors and sends regular updates about his work. He recently contacted HHI with this news.

‘My work as District Health Director involves managing resources for health in the district. Under me are 12 health facilities, that is Health Centres, mainly managed by Clinical Officers and nurses. Currently we do not have a hospital in our district; it’s under construction, 97 percent complete. This is the hospital I’m lobbying equipment for.

We are situated 60km from Chipata where we have a central hospital. The only accessible road is a gravel road which often is in a deplorable state. It can take nearly 2hrs to transport a patient to the nearest hospital. We are lobbying for a quick completion of the hospital so that we can cut down on the referrals and do surgical operations within the district.
We have engaged some nearby hospitals to spare us some extra equipment they are not using so that we can somehow start operations as soon as possible.’

Dr John then asks if HHI supporters would be interested in helping provide the new hospital with some vital equipment. He listed
1. Diathermy machine
2. Patient monitors (2)
3. Defibrillator
4. Nebulizers (2)

We’ll do what we can. Watch this space…..
