Naanga School

As you may know, Naanga school houses 35 disabled children who, because of the school’s remote location, are resident during term time. Because there was no staff accommodation at the school, the recently appointed head teacher Mr Arthur Bweupe was sleeping in a classroom, with cardboard demarcations, during the week. Now, thanks to our enthusiastic Scottish fund raisers the long-awaited house is progressing. The HHZ trustees have been closely overseeing the project and during the recent July visit to Naanga Special School the project team was very impressed with the building progress.

Not only did they note that the house has been built to window level but when they visited the dining hall and the kitchen to check on the new gas stove, they were particularly impressed with a cage that had been built to secure the gas cylinder with a view to the health and safety of all as well as to prevent theft. The team was also impressed with the school garden.

Concerns were raised, however, about additional costs generated by inflation, and unexpected items which needed to be purchased. We are also very aware of the impact of the Covid pandemic on the financial situation at the moment. In addition to this, the team was informed that thieves had recently stormed the locality and water pumps had been stolen. Since the pump at the school is not well secured the situation was worrysome.

The Project team advised the Head Teacher to prepare a report on the shortfall regarding the costings and any other items which needed to be purchased and also to cost the work required to secure the water pump.

The team concluded,
‘The school and the community appreciate the assistance that the organization is providing for them. The donations and the support have made a positive difference at school and the community. Indeed, every donation makes a difference in as far as improving the welfare of the disabled people is concerned.’

So, on behalf of the HHZ team and beneficiaries, we extend our grateful thanks and know that we are already assured of your continuing prayers and support. And don’t forget that updates of the exciting work done by SFHHI may be found on their website…………

Thank you, yet again!
