Visit to Choongo School

Bibian is now 23 and she was desperate to return to school following the amputation of her left leg in 2020. She has struggled with a very severe lymphatic disease since she was 8 years old. For many years HHI has supported her and her mother to make hospital trips and receive treatments but no cure was ever achieved. Bibian is now enjoying being a boarder in the disabled unit in Choongo school during term time. She has an artificial limb paid for by HHI but she lacks confidence in using it. Today, we met with Bibian’s house mother and emphasized the need for Bibian to practise using her limb whenever possible so that she can become mobile and move independently.
According to Bibian’s teacher, Bibian’s long- distance eyesight is not good, and she needs glasses. We have arranged for testing to take place at Monze Mission Hospital. Bibian was pleased to receive some personal items today such as toothpaste and cream. HHIUK sends about £45 each month for Bibian to use for personal needs in addition to paying her school fees.

The Choongo head teacher and deputy head mistress welcomed us, and in our discussions, we learnt about the many challenges the school has in trying to provide a workable environment for disabled students. There are no seats in the dining area for the disabled. They must stand to have their meals. It was decided that this problem could be easily solved by Robbie, the wizard HHI carpenter, who is now set to make some benches as he did for Nanga school. Water is another problem as are the lack of toilet facilities while the cooking area is also very dilapidated and there are not enough dormitories. So many needs and not enough funds!
